UK could pay £40,000,000,000 for Brexit divorce bill

It has been one of the biggest bones of contention since we voted out – but the government is apparently ready to pay a higher Brexit divorce bill.
Theresa May met with ministers today to discuss what they should do, given the EU won’t start talks properly until the funds are agreed.
Britain is previously thought to have offered to pay £20 billion as a leaving settlement – but the EU has asked for £40 billion.
It has been a sticking point in negotiations, but it looks like there could finally be some movement.
The BBC reports that ministers agree to pay more, if it means talks on a trading relationship can begin..

Whatever figure is agreed will also be dependent on the UK getting an acceptable deal at the end of negotiations.


Despite growing pressure from businesses to show she can drive talks onto the subject of future trading relations with the EU, May’s office gave little away as to the conclusions of Monday’s meeting.
‘It remains our position that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed in negotiations with the EU,’ a source from May’s office said.
